Easter in GermanyEaster is a Christian holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. But it's also about welcoming spring. Germans like to celebrate Easter and perform a lot of traditional activities. You can surprise your German friends or neighbors by doing some of the Easter traditions with them. π Here are the Easter traditions practiced in Germany. Let's start with the most common one. Easter bunny and finding eggsThe most common and fun tradition is parents hiding the easter eggs in the garden and kids finding them. In my apartment building, we celebrate this custom together. Parents come together and hide chocolate eggs and other treats in the common garden. And later ask the kids to find them. It's a fun activity for everyone and a great way to integrate with the locals. The origins of this custom go back a few hundred years. The story goes that Duchess Rosilinda von Lindenberg had to flee her home to protect herself from the war. The Dutchess found shelter in a small mining village. And to repay the villagers for their generosity, she brought chickens to them. The Dutchess also decorated the eggs for the children and hid them in nests in the forests for the children to find. When the children were finding the eggs, a rabbit jumped out of the nest. And from that time, the narrative is that the rabbit brought the Easter eggs. Easter tree (Osterbaum)Easter is full of fun activities. The next one on the list is decorating a tree in your garden with colorful easter eggs. Several Kitas and schools in Germany even have a day where all the kids paint and decorate eggs. The children then hang those eggs on a tree in the school or at their house. Again, it's an entertaining activity to do with your kids and neighbors. Easter fountainsHave you seen a fountain decorated with green leaves and flowers? Well, you just experienced one of the many easter traditions in Germany. The tradition was to decorate the wells with flowers, eggs, and green leaves. And soon, people started decorating public fountains. The belief is that drawing easter water brings good health and fortune. Easter fireDo you like bonfires, drinks, and traditional German food? Then you are gonna love Easter. On Good Friday or Black Saturday, communities set up bonfires. Naturally, it transforms into a fest with food and drinks. Here are some of the places where you can enjoy easter fire.
Easter marketsGermans like to set up small markets and sell traditional goods, food, and drinks during major festivals. Like the Christmas market, you can find an Easter market near you. If you have never been to an Easter market, you should definitely visit one this year. There, you can find all types of decorated eggs, egg alcohol, traditional decorations, food, and drinks. Moreover, you can enjoy nice weather and fresh spring air. Easter chocolate and treatsThere is no fun in a festival without treats. On Easter, you can find special Easter candies and chocolates in the supermarket. People even leave easter bunnies, eggs, or treats on their neighbor's doors or at office desks to celebrate Easter. So, don't be surprised if you find one at your door or on your office desk. You also surprise your neighbors or co-workers by putting an Easter bunny on their doorsteps or working desks. Locals follow many other traditions and customs during this great festival. So, don't miss it and enjoy every Easter tradition while you are in Germany. π Special offerEaster is also a time of exchanging treats and gifts. So, we have a special treat for you.
