One mistake is all it takes...

One of the GermanPedia members recently wrote us about an incident. To protect their identity, we'll refer to them as Stefan.

It was nice weather, and Stefan and his wife were going to visit their friend on her birthday.

Stefan parked his car in a quiet neighborhood. He and his wife were excited to celebrate their friend's birthday. While Stefan was talking to his wife (Anne), Anne opened the car door.

And all of a sudden... boom... A cyclist crashed into their car door.

Still in shock at what just happened, they rushed to help the cyclist and called the emergency services. The cyclist injured their knee and might have to undergo a lengthy treatment. Additionally, the cycle frame also got damaged.

The police made a detailed report and told them they had to cover the costs of medical treatment, pain, and suffering for the cyclist. The damage costs will at least be 20,000 €.

They also have to cover the costs of cycle repair or replacing the cycle. It was an e-bike that cost around 2500 €.

Additionally, they must cover the financial loss that the cyclist will incur due to their inability to work for a certain period of time. This cost will depend on the cyclist's profession and the duration of their inability to work.

Overall, they might end up paying anywhere between 30,000 € to 50,000 € for this incident.

Luckily, Anne had personal liability insurance to cover the costs. Otherwise, she would have had to pay the whole cost out of her own pocket.

Stefan told us he wanted to share this incident with as many people as possible. He wants to raise awareness about the importance of personal liability insurance in Germany.

Without the insurance, Stefan's family would have been in great financial trouble. Not only would they have lost years of savings and emergency funds, but their plan to buy a home would also have been destroyed.
