Best dental insurance plans in 2025
As 2024 ends, several insurance companies have launched new and revised existing insurance plans. In our latest research on best dental insurance plans, we discovered that new insurance plans have replaced the old ones from the top spot.
Old dental insurance plans that were on the top spot.
New dental insurance plans that took the top spot.
Here is why Barmenia and Feather couldn't make it.
-
Added a reimbursement limit on dental treatment costs in the first two years. Earlier, there was no reimbursement limit.
- The insurer will reimburse only 150€ in the first and second years for dental treatments like plastic fillings, periodontal treatments, etc.
- Limited the reimbursement of professional teeth cleaning to 200€ per annum. Moreover, Barmenia will only reimburse 80% of the costs.
Deutsche Familien Versicherung (DFV) kept its top spot
DFV* didn't reduce its services. On the contrary, it improved them further. Moreover, it kept the insurance premiums the same.
DFV increased the reimbursement limits in the first four years to the highest level in the industry.
- 1st year: 1750€
- 2nd year: 3500€
- 3rd year: 5250€
- 4th year: 7000€
- 5th year: no limit
Every dental insurance company sets reimbursement limits in the initial years. Thus, having high reimbursement limits is vital.

Is taking a dental insurance plan worth it in Germany?
Dentists are expensive in Germany. Unfortunately, public health insurance covers only a small part of your dental costs. Thus, having a good dental insurance plan is vital.
However, whether you need supplementary dental insurance depends on your life situation. Taking a dental insurance plan is worth it for the following people.
- You are 35 years old or above. The probability of developing dental problems increases drastically after 35. Moreover, getting a good and cheap dental insurance plan with existing dental problems is tough. Thus, we recommend getting one before you develop a dental problem.
- Regular smokers should get a dental insurance plan before it's too late.
- You are starting to develop dental problems.
- You don't take care of your dental hygiene.
You don't need dental insurance if you fall into one of the following categories.
- You have healthy teeth and are under 35.
- You maintain your dental hygiene, e.g., performing professional teeth cleaning twice a year, visiting the dentist regularly, etc.

Stop paying high health insurance premiums
95% of the services offered by all public health insurance companies are the same. The reason is that the government regulates health insurers and ensures they provide the same coverage.
This is why locals switch to a public insurance company that charges lower premiums.
You can compare the premium you pay with your current public insurer and potential savings here.
