Your unfair advantage in Germany

Essentials

Health : Emergency care reform (Notfallreform) approved. Here are the key takeaways.

  • Hospitals will have a single entrance to triage patients. True emergencies will be sent to the ER and minor cases to an on-site GP.
  • The 112 (emergency) and 116 117 (non-emergency) hotlines will be digitally linked to instantly route patients to the correct level of care via phone or video consultation.
  • Paramedics will be authorized to treat minor conditions on-scene. This will end the requirement to transport every patient to a hospital.
  • Full implementation scheduled for 2027 will reduce overcrowding in ERs and save 1.2 billion euros. [1]

Proposed : Contribution assessment ceiling for statutory health insurance is expected to rise from €5,812.50 to €6,375 per month in January 2027. The increase of 562.50€ is larger than the previous two annual increases of 337€ and 300€. This will impact the high earners. The income threshold for switching to private health insurance (PKV) is expected to rise to €84,150 gross per year in 2027. [2] [3]

If you are considering switching to private health insurance, always consult an insurance broker. You can consult the insurance broker we recommend.

Proposed : Surcharge on statutory long-term care insurance for childless individuals will increase from 0.6% to 0.9% from January 2027. [9] [10]

Long-Term Care Insurance Reform Raises Costs From 2027 ->

Proposed : Sugar tax on sweetened drinks will rise. The tax starts on 1 July 2027 pending a Bundestag vote. The tax rate depends on the drink's sugar content.

  • 5 to 8 grams of sugar per 100 ml: 26 cents per liter.
  • 8 grams or more of sugar per 100 ml: 32 cents per liter.

A 1.5-liter bottle of cola rises by about 48 cents in tax. [4]

Tax : Tobacco tax increase on 14 October 2026. The tax will increase in stages from 2027 through 2030. The projected price of a pack of 20 cigarettes:

  • Today: 8.05€
  • 2027: 9.20€
  • 2030: 11.92€

New rates for cigars, cigarillos, pipe tobacco and water-pipe tobacco take effect on 1 March 2027. The amendment is projected to raise 1.5 billion euros in 2027. [5] [6]

Immigration : BMI tightens the German language test rules. You need a B1 German language certificate for naturalization and settlement-permit applications. [12]

  • Today, you can get a B1 if you got B1 in speaking and B1 in any one written module.
  • In the new system, you need B1 in speaking. B1 in any one written module and A2 in the other written module. The change is scheduled to take effect on November 1, 2026.

Immigration : The BVerwG (Case 1 C 21.25) confirmed that immigration authorities and administrative courts are not legally bound by the factual details written in the criminal court's verdict. Under German law, if you (a foreign national) commit a crime, you face two separate legal processes:

  • Criminal Procedure: A criminal court determines guilt and decides on a sentence.
  • Administrative Procedure: The immigration office determines whether you pose a future risk to public safety and should be deported or expelled.

Even if a criminal court outlines a specific sequence of events or motives, the immigration office has the legal right and duty to assess the facts independently to form its own danger evaluation (Gefahrenprognose). [13]

Waiting for your residence permit?

It's not uncommon to wait several months for your family reunion visa, citizenship, Blue Card, etc. However, you don't have to.

Here are your options to push your application forward.

  • Send a formal letter to the authority requesting a status update. You can do it yourself or get support from a lawyer. Authorities reply to letters from lawyers more often than to letters from people like us.
  • File a lawsuit. Depending on which visa you applied for, you should wait 4 to 12 months before taking this step. You can file the lawsuit yourself or get support from a lawyer if you have a complex case. It's better to hire a lawyer than to do it yourself.
  • File for provisional injunction relief. This tool helps in emergency situations, such as separation from a newborn or minor child, job loss, or any irreparable harm caused by the delay that you can prove. By filing for provisional injunction relief, you get a decision within 2 to 4 weeks.

If you are not sure which option makes the most sense in your situation, you can get a free case assessment from the law firm (LegalWeg*) we recommend.

Warning : A lab study rated 13 of 15 temporary children's tattoos "not recommended". The tattoos contained 31 problematic chemicals, including lead, nickel, phthalates and PFAS. Six samples contained substances banned in the EU for cosmetics or toys. No formal recall has been issued. Stiftung Warentest advises buying only tattoos that list a shelf-life date, batch number, and ingredients. [14]

Phishing : Four fake emails are circulating in Germany. [15]

  • easybank: The mail says your account works again only after you activate a new real-time transfer service. A link leads to a fake activation page.
  • Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken: The mail demands a master data confirmation (Stammdatenbestätigung) and threatens restricted banking services.
  • Amazon Prime: The email says your fee could not be charged and asks you to update your payment details.
  • ING: The mail claims a security update requires identity verification. A 48-hour deadline and a threatened account lock create urgency.

For emergencies:

  • BSI Lagezentrum: +49 228 999582 5110
  • BaFin Consumer Protection: consumer@bafin.de
  • Police: 110
  • Fire brigade and ambulance: 112

AI corner

  • Launch : ChatGPT now lets you lock conversations behind a four-digit PIN, Face ID, or Touch ID on the Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans. Locked chats leave your regular history and search results. OpenAI says locking is not end-to-end encryption. Resetting the PIN permanently deletes all locked chats.
  • Launch : Google launched Gemini 4 Argon. It's half the price of Opus 5.5. However, it lags behind Opus in Agentic coding.
  • Learn : Check out this repo from Kun Chen. If you are running multiple agents at the same time and are tired of switching tabs and context, this is for you.
  • Learn : I am working on a new project, and hopefully I can launch it in Q1 2027. Here are a few changes I made to the coding process that let me ship 2 to 3 features daily.
    • I keep a live architecture document. Here it is if you are curious. AI reviews it and updates it every time a new feature is implemented.
    • Use GDPR and SOC II standards as hard rules from the start. This further aligns the AI agent to write secure, high-quality code.
    • I asked AI to create a design file with a detailed design guide that all departments in the organization can use.
    • I ask AI to create mockups, which I review manually. This is the only thing I review before asking the agent to start the implementation.
    • The mockups should look exactly like the end product.
    • The agent must compare the end implementation with the mockup and fix any issues.
    • The agent must create a video of the feature that has 3 purposes.
      • The agent uses the video to do a regression test.
      • I use it to check if the feature works as expected.
      • I use the video for social media and to announce the feature in-app to existing users.
    • The first feature you build, review it thoroughly. Ask AI to fix every finding, create a hard rule (mechanical script), and document the learning (md file). AI agents reuse patterns from the code. So build the pattern right once, and the future code will follow it.

These changes push the Agent to review its own work and fix the issues. The impact is that most features are good to go in one shot. The learnings I shared in my past newsletter ensure code quality.

PS: I am no expert. The AI world is changing every minute. I am learning from all the amazing people building in the open, and I wanted to share my learnings with you all.

  • Tax revenue for 2026 is expected to fall by about €17.8 billion. The shortfall adds pressure on the federal budget. [21]
  • The Oberlandesgericht Hamm ruled on October 12 that E.ON Energy Solutions could not raise district-heating (Fernwärme) working prices in three networks under its existing pricing formula. The ruling follows a class action by the Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband (vzbv). Affected customers in Erkrath-Hochdahl, Hamburg-Lohbrügge-Nord and Schwalbach-Limes can expect refunds of several hundred to over €1,000. The ruling is not final, since vzbv and E.ON may still appeal to the Bundesgerichtshof. [11]
