Essentials
Finance : Women in Germany receive an average of 24% less statutory pension than men. Though Mütterrente and Kinderberücksichtigungszeiten offset most of the deficit. However, a break from employment, lower wages than men earn, and part-time work create a gap that the statutory pension system cannot close. Thus, it's vital for women to plan their pension even more carefully. As we always mention, investing in an ETF savings plan is the easiest and quickest way to get started. [8]
Finance : Statutory pensions will increase by 4.24% from July 1, 2026. The Federal Cabinet (Bundeskabinett) approved it, and now an approval from the Bundesrat is pending. If you receive a gross pension of €1,000 per month, it will increase by €42.4. However, you'll pay Social Security contributions on this amount. If your pension crosses the basic allowance, you'll also pay the taxes. So, the net increase will be lower.
Finance : More debt and taxes. German Finance Minister Klingbeil presented the key figures for the 2027 federal budget.
€543.3 billion total expenditure.
€110.8 billion in net borrowing (Nettokreditaufnahme, NKA)
€196.5 billion total new debt after adding debt-financed special funds (Sondervermögen)
Where will the money to pay this debt come from? Taxes.
Plastics tax
The sugar tax on sugar-sweetened soft drinks will increase
Tobacco and alcohol taxes will increase
Adjustments to the crypto taxation
Stronger fight against financial and tax crime [3]
Rights : Your rights if you face poor internet speeds on your mobile network.
You can terminate your contract early (Sonderkündigung).
You are eligible for a price reduction.
To exercise this right, you must run 30 measurements using the Bundesnetzagentur's Breitbandmessung-App over up to 5 days. At least 3 days must show speeds significantly below the contracted maximum. Document the result and file a complaint with your network provider. If they don't resolve the issue, you can submit a formal complaint to Bundesnetzagentur. [2]
8 Changes in May you should know of
May 1: The energy tax on gasoline and diesel will be reduced by about 17 cents per liter for two months.
May 1: Employers can voluntarily pay a tax‑free “crisis bonus” of up to €1,000 per person until June 30, 2027.
May 1: A pay reform for federal civil servants abolishes the lowest pay grade. This means employees will automatically move up to a higher band and earn more.
May 1: About 2.5 million employees in the public sector (federal and local level) will receive a 2.8% pay rise starting in May. Trainees, interns, and students in the public sector will additionally get €75 more per month.
May 1: Deutsche Bahn is freezing long-distance ICE ticket prices for 12 months from 1 May 2026. It doesn't mean every ICE trip will stay the same price. DB uses dynamic pricing. So, the popular routes/times can cost more. [2]
May 15: Newborn screening will be expanded to detect additional conditions. It includes detecting vitamin B12 deficiency and certain metabolic disorders.
During May: A new portal for electric car subsidies will go online in May. You can apply for grants between €1,500 and €6,000, depending on the vehicle and its situation. Read more ->
End of May: Germany must implement a new EU directive on energy efficiency by the end of May. It'll tighten building standards and make renovations more important. Read more ->

Germany's Cabinet approved the GKV reform (BStabG) on 29 April 2026. It targets €15.6 billion in savings.
The law is not yet in force; the Bundestag and Bundesrat must still vote. Here is what changes and when:
From 1 January 2027
Co-payments on prescription medicines rise 50%.
Dental prosthetic subsidies drop by 10 percentage points.
Cannabis flower prescriptions lose GKV coverage.
The contribution ceiling (Beitragsbemessungsgrenze) rises by ~€300/month.
From 1 January 2028
Free spousal co-insurance (Familienversicherung) ends for non-working partners. The working member pays a 2.5% surcharge on their gross income. On a €4,000 gross monthly salary, that is €100 extra per month or €1,200 per year.
The planned sick pay cut (from 70% to 65% of gross) is not part of the law. Read more ->
Watchout
Deadline : The deadline to file the 2025 income tax return (Steuererklärung) in Germany is July 31, 2026. If you use a tax advisor, the deadline extends to March 1, 2027.
Phishing : Scam emails impersonating Deutsche Rentenversicherung and AOK are circulating this week. Both impersonate official institutions and urge you to confirm personal data or follow external links. Delete the emails without clicking. [1]
Product Recall :Samyang Hot Chicken Ramen Carbonara has been recalled due to elevated glycidyl ester levels. Glycidyl esters are potentially genotoxic and carcinogenic at sustained dietary exposure. Genotoxic agents damage DNA or chromosomes, often leading to mutations. Carcinogenic agents cause cancer. Do not consume the product and return it to the store. [2]

AI Corner
Learn : If you are tired of managing multiple API keys for different AI models, you can use OpenRouter. OpenRouter allows you to use any AI model via one OpenRouter API key. You can use its auto routing feature to save costs. We usually stick to one vendor and one model for every task, even if the task doesn't require a premium model. This increases your costs. In auto-routing, OpenRouter analyzes your prompt and selects the best-fit model for the task. For simple tasks, it selects the cheaper models; for complex tasks, it selects the premium models. In real projects, people have reported 50-90% of savings. [1]
Learn : Build your company of AI agents with Paperclip. Paperclip is an open-source agent orchestration layer that you can deploy on your computer with a single command. You can assign different roles to different AI agents (Open Claw, Hermes, Claude, OpenAI, etc.), and they will work independently as you have commanded them.
Learn : Here is how we fixed the following problems and reduced our development time.
AI is not following any particular architecture or design principles.
Implementation of every feature feels like developing a new app from scratch with a different architecture.
We must review every step manually to ensure there are no mistakes. Give several pieces of feedback until we achieve what we need.
As the code base grew, it became hard to understand what was happening where.
Following changes made these problems manageable. They didn't eliminate them, but now it's a lot less painful.
Make a solid architecture with strict contracts. In our case, we created a layered architecture for both backend and frontend. Split the whole application into domains (features). Strict contracts between each layer. This means each layer is responsible for doing only one thing and has a strict interface contract.
Create a template that the AI uses to create the plan (master plan) before writing a single line of code. Every feature we develop, we create a master plan. We split the feature into smaller features and create master plans for each. We review each master plan carefully and give feedback. Once the master plans are approved, the Agentic pipeline takes over and automatically implements everything.
Build an agentic pipeline to automate. Here is how our agentic pipeline looks.
AI gets the smaller master plan as input. It breaks it down into different units. We created a template of how each unit's plan must look. Each unit represents the work needed in each layer for that small feature. We followed the principle of splitting the task into small and specific packets.
AI implements one unit at a time. It reviews its own implementation and implements the fixes identified in the review. It continues to implement all the units once the backend has been implemented. We review the backend implementation manually.
Similarly, it implements the frontend units. We review it manually. Once we give the green signal, the changes are pushed to production.
We only have to review the master plans and the final backend and frontend implementations.
Because we created clear, strict contracts between layers, AI errors reduced drastically. We rarely have to tell it to change anything.
Moreover, as the features are small, the blast area (number of files and lines of code added or edited) is smaller. This makes it easier to review the change.

Germany plans to launch E20 petrol with up to 20% bioethanol. It could be available in Germany from around 2027/2028. It's intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Cars consume about 3% more fuel with E20. So, you should compare the cost per kilometer, not just the price per liter, to see if it's cheaper than E5. [3]
Germany's existing petrol price-control law has backfired. Instead of reducing the fuel prices for customers, it increased them. Per the reform, gas stations can increase fuel prices once per day at noon. The goal was to reduce “noise” in price changes. But it also removed the competitive pressure to keep prices low. The reason is that everyone changes the price at the same time. According to researchers at ZEW and the Düsseldorf Institute for Competition Economics, retail margins of gas stations rose by 5–6 cents per liter after the reform. [7]
