Essentials

Finance : Germany's inflation rate rose to 2.9% in April 2026. This is the highest level since January 2024. High energy prices are driving the increase.

  • Motor fuel increased by 26.2% year-on-year.
  • Heating oil increased by 55.1% year-on-year.
  • Food prices overall rose 1.2%. Eggs are up 14.6%.

At the same time, the German Economic Institute has cut its 2026 GDP growth forecast to 0.4%. You should expect average inflation of around 3% for 2026. [1]

Law : The Bundesrat voted against one-off tax-free employee bonuses of up to €1,000. German federal states objected to the estimated €2.8 billion fiscal cost to Länder and municipalities, with no compensation mechanism. The current government is now discussing raising income tax on higher earners as an alternative. Read more ->

Law : Bundesrat passes the bill to bring buy-now-pay-later services and microloans up to €200 under full EU consumer credit rules. This means lenders must conduct stricter creditworthiness checks. Consumers will get the same rights as for a normal loan. This includes receiving the required information, 14-day withdrawal rights, etc. The new law will take effect on November 20, 2026. Law : Germany's cabinet passed the Gebäudemodernisierungsgesetz (GModG 2026). The new law scraps the 65% renewable energy requirement for new heating installations. It introduces a "bio-staircase" instead:

  • 10% renewable by 2029
  • 60% renewable by 2040

The law must pass the Bundestag by May 29, 2026, to meet an EU directive deadline. [2]

Travel : Deutsche Bahn offers a €99.99 family ticket for up to 5 people. With this ticket, your family can travel together on long-distance trains to and from Germany. It also includes seat reservation. The offer is available from mid-June to mid-September. [3]

Watchout

Deadline : The deadline to file the 2025 income tax return (Steuererklärung) in Germany is July 31, 2026. If you use a tax advisor, the deadline extends to March 1, 2027.

Deadline : US citizens and green card holders residing in Germany must file their 2025 US federal tax return by June 15, 2026 (automatic overseas extension).

Phishing : Fraudsters are sending fake emails impersonating the ARD/ZDF Beitragsservice. The email claims your quarterly broadcast fee is overdue and must be paid immediately to the enclosed bank account. The ARD/ZDF never requests payment by email. [1]

Product Recall : The following products have been recalled by the manufacturer.

  • GLOBUS frozen Beeren-Mix (300g, BBD 29.09.2027) due to possible Hepatitis A contamination. [3]
  • CUBE E-Bikes, 2026 model range fitted with ACID Carbon Hybrid crankarms. These are the units delivered before May 8, 2026. The crankarms can fail under load. [4]

  • Developers are now building coding languages for AI. As developers use "React" to build the frontend of a web application. Similarly, AI can use OpenUI to build the frontend reliably. Read this article to understand what OpenUI is and why the community built it.
  • Meta installed tracking software on its employees' computers. The software tracks mouse movement, key strokes, and more to train AI and build agents. [1]
  • I canceled my Cursor subscription to save costs. I started with Cursor and took the Max plan ($200 per month). But I hit the limits within 10 days of heavy use. So, I subscribed to ClaudeCode (Max - $99) and Codex (Pro - $20) directly. I haven't hit the limits so far. I still use the Cursor IDE. Simply install the Claude Code and Codex plugins.
  • Anthropic and OpenAI are entering the forward-deployed engineer (FDE) model introduced by Palantir. The FDE model deploys engineers directly into the enterprise to understand the client's workflow and build solutions that fit it. The client continues to operate in their existing infrastructure. The FDE adds a layer to create custom workflows that the generic infrastructure does not offer. This ensures that your organization's best practices stay within your organization. Your competitor doesn't get it via the generic platform's next release. [1, 2]

  • Germany's military service questionnaire has a 28% non-response rate. The Ministry of Defense is threatening fines of up to €1,000 for repeated non-response. Conscientious objector applications rose sharply: 2,656 in Q1 2026 alone, compared to 3,867 for all of 2025. [3]
