Rights :The EU has agreed to reform air passenger rights.
Compensation of up to €600 for flight cancellations and delays of three hours or more stays in place.
Airlines must now notify you of your entitlements within 96 hours.
Ticket prices must include hand luggage fees.
The definition of "exceptional circumstances", situations where airlines owe no compensation, should be clearly mentioned.
A few formal approvals are still pending. The new rules take effect one year after that. [2]
Tax :No more taxes on fictitious interest payments. Suppose you sell your apartment to your child or a close relative and let them pay in interest-free installments. Until now, the tax office assumed a 5.5% interest component on those payments and taxed you on it. It doesn't matter if you actually received any interest. The Federal Fiscal Court (BFH) has now ended this practice (VIII R 30/24, March 24, 2026). As long as you and the buyer agree in writing that each installment is purely purchase price and no interest is charged or paid, you owe no tax on it. Moreover, the interest-free installments also do not count as a gift. This means no inheritance tax. [1]
Law : Several new traffic rules take effect in Germany in July 2026.
From July 1, swapping Flensburg penalty points for a fine payment is banned. Anyone caught arranging such a swap faces a fine of up to €30,000.
The limitation period for traffic offenses doubles from three to six months. This means a ticket can arrive by post up to six months after the offense.
Local authorities will be permitted to use Scancars. These are vehicles that automatically scan number plates to detect illegal or incorrectly parked cars.
From July 7, emergency brake assist and distraction warning systems become mandatory in all newly registered passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. [3]
Insurance : Private health insurers (PKV) are raising premiums from July 1, 2026. If your insurer is increasing the premium, you have a special right to cancel the contract within two months of receiving notice of the increase. Changing private health insurance usually doesn't make sense because you'll lose part of your old age savings provision. If you recently joined the insurance company, it may be worth exploring other options.
Many people are waiting for more than a year to get their German citizenship. If you are one of them, you don't have to wait.
Here are different options available to you
Akteneisicht: You can request your files from the authority. This gives you an idea if authority has started working on your case. You can do it yourself or via a lawyer.
Warning letters: Send a letter to the authority requesting a status. Clearly mention the deadline with a warning that no response will leave with you no option but to file a lawsuit. Usually authorities don't respond to the letters sent by you. If a letter is sent by a lawyer, the response rate is 50-50.
File a lawsuit: This is the last resort. Many times, authorities start working once you file the lawsuit. Typically it takes between two and six months after filing the lawsuit to get the citizenship. You can also do this step yourself; however, we recommend doing it via a lawyer.
How to claim your utility bill on your German tax return
You are a tenant and received your annual utility bill (Nebenkostenabrechnung). Here is what you can deduct from taxes (§35a EStG).
Household-related services (haushaltsnahe Dienstleistungen). It covers the following costs: caretaker costs, garden maintenance, and snow removal. You can deduct 20% of these expenses, up to a maximum of €4,000 per year.
Craftsman services (Handwerkerleistungen). It covers repairs and renovations carried out in your home. It could be heating system repairs or bathroom renovations. Again, 20% is deductible. However, you can deduct only the labor costs, and the annual cap is €1,200.
Check your annual utility bill carefully and deduct the above costs.
NOTE: Electricity, water, and garbage collection fees are not deductible.

New launch : GPT 5.6 is expected to be launched to the public by end of June.
New launch : OpenAI launched Record & Replay for Mac. Show it a repetitive task once and it converts that into a reusable, editable skill. See it in action.
Learn : Vercel just open-sourced Eve. It's a framework to build AI agents. You can compare it with Next.js. Next.js is a framework to build web applications. Eve is a framework to build AI agents.
Learn : With AI writing code, we, as human beings, are the bottleneck in the process. Teams and individuals are seeking ways to remove themselves from the workflow. Here is a great repository that can help you automate most of your feature development. I have combined the learnings from this repo and my own to build a customized automated workflow. It has 3x my productivity.
PS: Building something new
I'm building a boilerplate that includes everything you need to ship a SOC 2 Type II web app. This includes AI workflows, skills, architecture, API gateways, E2E testing, security rules, design patterns, and more.
The goal is to fork the repo and launch a new product within a week.
Setting up this infrastructure from scratch takes a minimum of two to three weeks. And if you're new to coding, the architectural and library choices you make early on will haunt you later. The reason is you don't know what you don't know.
I learned this the hard way.
Three abandoned apps. Three full refactors of my current one. Hundreds of study hours and discussions with software architects. This boilerplate is the product of all that.
Whether you come from a technical background or not, this gives you a production-ready foundation to build on from day one.
Foreigners in Germany face systematic discrimination on the rental market, according to research by the German Center for Integration and Migration Research (DeZIM). People with German-sounding names had a 22% chance of being invited to an apartment viewing. Those with names from the Middle East or Africa had a 16% chance. Foreign nationals pay an average of €7.75 per square meter in net cold rent. This is 9.5% more than the €7.08 paid by German citizens. One in three people with a migrant background report experiencing racial discrimination during their housing search. [1]
Germany's €15.3 billion health insurance stabilization law faces Bundesrat opposition. The states are demanding deletion of planned hospital cost cuts and have rejected the law's current scope. A delay would threaten 2027 statutory health insurance contribution rates. [2]
Care worker wages in Germany have reached parity with hospital nursing staff. Compensation for Pflegekräfte and care assistants has significantly risen under the care remuneration law. The change affects the cost and availability of both in-home and residential care across Germany. [3]
